One more try

Well I'm going to try my trap one last time tonight, and if I still don't catch a moth then that will be the end of that trap for good. Night looks warm(ish) and overcast, it might be a bit windy, but I'll give it the one last try. Wish me luck :)

Not Moths

Well while I plan my new moth trap no moth news, but it seems we have come alive with butterflies, yesterday, in or passing through the garden we had, Large White, Green Veined White, Holly Blue and a surprise in a Speckled Wood! Only Peacock and Orange Tip missing from the complete garden list (although abviously as the year moves on that list will grow).

Still nice to see so many.

New article about moth photography

Well today I published an article to my site about moth photography; read it here I'd be interested to see what people think?

As for trapping, it is most definitely my trap, plenty of bugs around the light of an evening, but no moths caught!! Time to start the change to a simpler skinner trap design. No just need to get it all made for me (thank god someone in my family is handy with a saw!).

I guess there won't be many updates here for a while (unless I stumble across some day flying critters).

Still no luck

1 lone Hebrew Character in the trap this morning, I must be doing something wrong! Will try positioning the trap away from bushes and if that fails will try a blacklight bulb (with definite UV rating of over 350), and if that fails, I'll look at a skinner style trap, while saving for a brought trap.

hmmm...

Well I made some changes to my trap after accidentally destroying the lampshade that was my funnel, and still I am not getting much in the way of catches. 1 Hebrew Character and 1 Emmelina monodactyla (a new one for my garden here) was my sum total last night I'm now questioning my bulb, having recently been told that the UV from a bulb for mothing needs to be 350+ the bulb I have has no mention of this?? I plan to buy a black light of this strength soon, but if that fails, then I shall be building a simpler skinner type trap and starting again.

On a more pleasant note, on a walk with my lovely lady and gorgeous daughter yesterday we saw a total of 8 butterfly species:

Brimstone
Tortoiseshell
Peacock
Orange tip
Large White
Small white (in my front garden)
Holly blue
Comma (well I think it was comma, I was sure it was but wasn't that close, and now am going to have to pop back to the local wood just to make sure it wasn't a fritillary)

Not a bad hall, and on such a lovely warm spring day, with the woods alive with singing Chiffchaff and Blackcaps, Green Woodpeckers yaffling and Great Spotted Woodpeckers drumming and even a regular calling Nuthatch, it was all really nice spring walk. Makes up for poor trapping over the last few weeks.

Oops

Well in trying to alter my Funnel last night, I totally destroyed it!! So I am now on the lookout for a new funnel system to replace my lampshde. As such there won't be many moth catches in the next few nights/weeks.

I am also considering changing to a skinner style trap just as they seem far easier to build properly (I know they are not as effective at retaining moths, but then niether was my last one lol.
